This Indian miniature painting is executed in opaque pigments and gold on paper (wasli), dating to the 18th century. The composition depicts a royal figure or high-ranking noble mounted on a dark brown horse, rendered in profile. The central figure is shown with a golden nimbus around the head and is dressed in a dark green floral-patterned jama and a turban adorned with a sarpech. He holds a long spear in his right hand, while a circular black shield with golden floral bosses is positioned at his side. A smaller attendant figure is positioned behind the horse, carrying an aftaba, a circular golden sunshade decorated with floral and calligraphic-style motifs. The horse is outfitted with golden bridles, a decorated chest strap, and a patterned saddlecloth.
Approximately 31 x 20.8cm
Condition report:
The paper support exhibits wear at the edges, including minor fraying and small losses at the corners and margins. Faint horizontal creases are visible across the centre of the image. Minor surface abrasions and pigment loss are present, consistent with the age of the item. The gold leaf and overall colour palette remain largely intact and well-preserved.
