An Indo-Persian Steel ‘Alam’ Plaque with Gold-Gilt Calligraphy, Possibly 19th Century.
A circular steel plaque in the style of a ceremonial ‘alam’, traditionally mounted atop Shi’a processional standards carried during Muharram rituals. The plaque features a dense and beautifully executed composition of gilt Arabic calligraphy arranged in sweeping interlaced strokes across the face.
