An Indian Sikh Miniature Painting Depicting Guru Nanak and Kauda Rakshasa, 19th-20th Century.

An Indian Sikh miniature painting illustrating the famous Janamsakhi episode of Guru Nanak’s encounter with the cannibal Kauda Rakshasa. The composition is divided into two registers, with a row of brightly dressed figures standing in the upper section, observing the scene below. In the foreground, two horned demon figures stand at left, one stirring a large black cauldron while the other stands beside him with a rope-like tool in hand. Opposite them sits Guru Nanak, depicted in golden robes and a distinctive red-topped turban, seated calmly on a patterned mat with a rosary in hand. Behind him stands Bhai Mardana, holding a stringed instrument, while another attendant sits cross-legged playing a tanpura. A lush fruiting tree rises behind them.

Approximately 38.5 x 32cm
