"Untitled" – ABDUR RAHMAN CHUGHTAI (1897–1975).

An ink and gouache composition on paper by Abdur Rahman Chughtai, depicting a seated elder scholar holding a cup in one hand and reading from a manuscript, attended by two graceful female figures standing behind him. The scene features classic Chughtai characteristics: elongated forms, flowing garments, and the artist’s refined linear contour work.

Abdur Rahman Chughtai (1897–1975) was one of Pakistan’s most celebrated artists, often regarded as the country’s first significant modern painter. Blending Mughal miniature traditions with Art Nouveau influences, his unique style brought global recognition to South Asian art in the 20th century. He illustrated classic literary works, designed Pakistan’s first stamps, and contributed to the cultural identity of the newly formed nation. His legacy continues through institutions such as the Chughtai Museum, and his work remains an emblem of Pakistani visual heritage.
