Lot 188: A CHINESE CELADON-GLAZED CRACKLED JAR, QING DYNASTY.
This large porcelain jar is of globular form, featuring a well-rounded body that tapers slightly towards a short, wide neck and a rounded rim. The vessel is enveloped in a thick, pale celadon glaze with a subtle greyish-green colour. The glaze is characterised by a dense, all-over network of fine crackle, an archaistic feature intended to emulate the Guan or Ge wares of the Song Dynasty. One side of the body features a faint, subtly moulded or incised decoration appearing as a stylised cloud scroll or ruyi head. The interior is similarly glazed. The base bears a square mark in underglaze blue consisting of six characters in seal script (zhuanshu), arranged in three vertical columns, reading Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi (Made in the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing).
H: Approximately 20cm
Provenance: Purchased in Peking, from the antique dealer Teh Ku Chai.
Transported to Tientsin and shipped to Kobe, Japan.
Later brought to New Yrk and exhibited by Yamanaka & Co.
Condition report:
The jar appears to be in good overall condition. The fine network of crazing is a deliberate decorative feature of the glaze. There are some minor, scattered iron spots and small pits in the glaze. No chips, cracks, or visible signs of restoration are apparent.
