A hanging brass Arabic astrolabe, designed in the tradition of Islamic astronomical instruments. The device comprises a circular brass mater with a high, lobed kursi (throne) at the top, which is decorated with hand-engraved foliate and floral motifs. A suspension shackle and ring are attached through the kursi for hanging. The front of the instrument features a pierced rete (star map) with intricate fretwork and multiple star-pointers. Beneath the rete are three interchangeable double-sided brass tympans (plates), each finely engraved with stereographic projections, almucantar lines, and azimuth scales for various latitudes. The internal base of the mater is also engraved with celestial coordinates. The reverse of the mater is extensively engraved with mathematical and astronomical scales, including a sine/cosine quadrant in the upper left, a quadrant for seasonal hours in the upper right, and a shadow square in the lower section for determining heights and distances. The entire instrument is densely engraved with Arabic script labelling star positions, latitudes, and functional scales. The assembly is secured by a central pin and washer.

H: Approximately 17cm

Condition report:

The instrument is in a condition commensurate with age, showing general surface patination, minor tarnishing, and light scratching throughout. The engraved script and scales remain mostly crisp and legible. The alidade (sighting rule) is missing from the assembly.
