Lot 28: A KHORASAN-STYLE OPENWORK BRONZE LION.
A Khorasan-style cast bronze lion, modelled standing foursquare with a pronounced chest, upright head and long curved tail terminating in a smaller animal head. The body, neck and haunches are extensively pierced in openwork, forming geometric lattice patterns interspersed with engraved and cast interlaced roundels and knot motifs. The stylised head is formed with pointed ears, almond-shaped eyes and an open mouth, while the powerful legs terminate in broad hoof-like feet. The surface displays a substantial green and brown patination, enhancing the sculptural and archaic appearance of the bronze.
