A Chinese Longquan celadon-glazed mallet vase, also known as a kinuta vase. The vessel is constructed from stoneware with a tapering cylindrical body and a tall neck flanked by two applied phoenix-form handles. It features a wide, everted dish-shaped mouth. The piece is covered in an even, pale sea-green celadon glaze with a waxy texture and a fine, subtle crackle. The glaze terminates before the foot ring, which has fired to a reddish-brown iron colour. The recessed base is glazed.

H: Approximately 16.6cm

Provenance: Purchased at Christie’s, London, Spring Sale, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 1950’s, by a Hong Kong dealer in Asian works of art.

Thereafter in 1975 by J Honeychurch Antiques, Hollywood Road, Hong Kong.

Condition report:

The vase is in good overall condition. Visible wear includes minor pitting and surface scratching to the glaze. The unglazed foot ring shows some small chips and abrasions. No major cracks or restorations are visible.
