Lot 372: JAMES SALT, OIL ON CANVAS, VENETIAN VEDUTA
0 views
A 19th-century oil painting on stretched canvas depicting a luminous Venetian veduta, showing a view across the lagoon towards the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. The work is executed in a Romantic style, featuring a soft, hazy atmosphere and a warm, tonal palette. The composition includes traditional Venetian sailing vessels, or bragozzi, with characteristic ochre and red sails navigating past a stone bridge and architectural clusters. The brushwork is blended in the sky and water, with more textured applications used for the highlights on the architecture and the sails. In the lower right corner, the work is signed in red paint ‘J Salt’. The signature consists of a stylized ‘J’ with a flourish above it, followed by ‘Salt’ in a script where the ‘S’ is elongated. The painting is housed in a substantial and ornate gilt wood and composition frame featuring deep cove moulding, floral scrolls, and shell-motif corner flourishes.
Approximately 99 x 65cm
Condition report:
The canvas shows visible signs of age-related craquelure throughout the paint surface, which is particularly noticeable in the sky (photo 1). A small circular indentation or possible old repair is visible in the upper right quadrant of the sky (photo 1). The varnish shows minor surface dirt and slight yellowing. The frame has visible cracking in the gesso and composition ornament, typical of its age, and a small gap is visible in the lower right interior mitre joint (photo 2).
