This porcelain vase is of meiping form, featuring high, rounded shoulders tapering to a slightly flared foot and a small, waisted neck. The body is decorated in underglaze blue and iron-red enamel with a design of several five-clawed dragons writhing amongst ruyi-shaped clouds. The dragons are detailed in blue, while the flame-like clouds and wisps are highlighted in overglaze iron-red. A collar of pendant ruyi-shaped lotus lappets adorns the shoulders, and bands of stylised cresting waves and sea spray encircle the neck and the base. The recessed and glazed base features an apocryphal six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double-ring border. The mark is read from the top right column downwards, then the left column: 大 (Da), 清 (Qing), 雍 (Yong), 正 (Zheng), 年 (Nian), 製 (Zhi), translating to ‘Made in the Yongzheng Period of the Great Qing’.

H: Approximately 22cm

Condition report:

The vase is in good condition with minor surface wear. There is some minor brownish staining and kiln grit present on the unglazed foot rim consistent with the manufacturing process and age. No chips, cracks, or restorations are visible.
