Lot 339: AN EAST ASIAN POLYCHROME DECORATED CARVED WOOD FIGURE OF A STANDING BUDDHA.
This standing Buddha figure is carved from wood and finished with a polychrome gesso and paint surface, characteristic of traditional East Asian Buddhist sculpture. The subject is depicted in a serene posture with hands held in anjali mudra, the gesture of greeting and prayer, standing atop an integral double-lotus pedestal and a tiered hexagonal base. The figure features classical iconographic elements including tightly curled hair retaining traces of blue pigment, a prominent ushnisha, and elongated earlobes.
H: Approximately 31cm
Condition report:
The overall condition is consistent with age. There is extensive age-related craquelure throughout the polychrome layers, with significant pigment loss and minor chipping, particularly along the edges of the robes, the base, and the hair. Surface staining is visible on the reverse. The wooden core appears stable with no major structural splits or repairs evident.
