An Indian School miniature painting, executed in opaque watercolour (gouache) with gold heightening on card. The scene depicts three royal figures travelling on horseback through a green landscape. The central male figure, likely an emperor or prince, is shown in profile wearing an orange jama and holding a single rose, a common iconographic trope in Mughal portraiture. Behind him sits a female consort, and both figures are adorned with golden nimbuses signifying their royal status. A younger figure, possibly a prince, follows on a dapple-grey horse, carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. The horses are finely detailed with ornate harnesses and jewellery. The background consists of a flat green field transitioning into a vibrant, horizontally streaked sky in shades of orange, white, and blue. The artwork is enclosed within a decorative border of purple and gold rules and is mounted on a larger buff-coloured card. A faint pencil notation ’11’ is visible on the upper margin of the mount.

Approximately 33.3 x 26.7cm

Condition report:

The painting shows visible signs of age and wear. There are several areas of pigment loss and flaking, most notably in the lower-left foreground and within the upper sky area. The paper and mount exhibit general surface toning and minor marks. The edges of the card mount show light wear and some bumping to the corners.
