This Indian miniature painting is executed in opaque watercolour on paper, depicting a portrait of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. The work features several traditional iconographic attributes, including the vertical third eye on the forehead, a crescent moon tucked into the matted hair, and two cobras, with one coiled about the neck and another emerging from the hair. Shiva is shown wearing large circular earrings, known as kundalas, and is adorned with a floral garland of pink flowers and green leaves. The painting displays delicate modelling of the face and fine detailing, possibly with gold-tone highlights on the jewellery and ornaments. The style reflects late 19th or early 20th-century North Indian traditions, influenced by Rajput or Pahari painting schools.

Approximately 27.2 x 20.5cm

Condition report:

The paper shows overall toning and scattered foxing throughout the background. There are visible signs of minor pigment loss and surface abrasions consistent with the age of the piece. The painting has not been examined out of its frame. The modern frame and mount are in good condition.
