A Chinese parcel-gilt bronze censer cast in the form of a recumbent qilin. The mythical beast is depicted in a resting pose with its head turned sharply back over its shoulder. The head features an open mouth showing teeth and tongue, flared nostrils, and a single horn extending backwards. The elongated neck is decorated with finely chased overlapping scales and stylised flame-like scrollwork. The body is robustly modelled with hooved limbs tucked beneath. Centred on its back is a removable, fitted lid with pierced openwork decoration designed to allow the release of incense smoke.
H: Approximately 16cm
L: Approximately 25.5cm
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition. There is expected wear to the parcel-gilding and surface patina commensurate with age. The bronze shows minor surface oxidation and small areas of pitting. The lid appears to be original and fits correctly. There are no obvious signs of structural repair.
