Lot 219: A CHINESE CARVED WHITE JADE MONKEY AND DOUBLE GOURD GROUP
0 views
A Chinese white jade carving worked in the round with openwork. The ornament depicts two large double gourds (hulu) arranged side-by-side, joined by a gnarled, scrolling vine. A monkey (hou) is positioned atop the vine in a dynamic pose, grasping a branch that terminates in a hollow cylindrical form. The group is further detailed with broad, heart-shaped leaves and trailing tendrils. The stone is of an even, pale celadon-white tone with a polished, waxy luster and occasional minor natural inclusions. In Chinese iconography, the double gourd is a symbol of longevity and fertility, while the monkey represents a pun for marquis (hou), signifying a wish for promotion to high rank.
H: Approximately 6.7cm
Condition report:
The carving is in generally good condition, commensurate with age. No major chips, cracks, or signs of professional restoration are visible. There is minor surface wear and natural internal veining/inclusions inherent to the stone. One small natural fissure is visible in the lower-left vine section.
