An Islamic ceramic gaming or chess piece modelled in the form of a standing elephant, possibly representing the al-fil (elephant/bishop) in the Islamic chess tradition. The animal is depicted with a lowered trunk, prominent ears and a raised element upon its back, the body decorated with impressed circular motifs. Covered overall in a dark blue-black glaze, with areas of surface wear, glaze loss, craquelure and earthen deposits.
