A very large Islamic chess piece carved from translucent rock crystal, of substantial domed architectural form and probably representing a king. The surface is extensively carved in relief with symmetrical palmettes, scrolling tendrils, radiating leaf motifs and geometric bands arranged across the front, reverse and sides. The clear to slightly smoky rock crystal displays natural internal inclusions and variations, with areas of wear and losses. The form and decorative vocabulary are inspired by medieval Islamic rock crystal gaming pieces associated with the Fatimid period.
