Bahadur Shah Zafar – A Calligraphic Devotional Composition with Symmetrical Script, 19th Century.
Ink and pigments on paper presenting a highly structured calligraphic composition attributed to Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor and a noted poet-calligrapher. The central panel is organised around a symmetrical, wheel-like arrangement of bold black Arabic script set against a pale turquoise ground, framed within a geometric cartouche. The calligraphy radiates outward from a central axis, creating a sense of balance, rhythm, and spiritual order.
The surrounding borders are richly decorated with repeating floral and lattice motifs in gold and dark green, enclosing subsidiary calligraphic panels above and below. The lower register features an inscription in flowing red script, providing visual contrast and anchoring the composition, while the upper cartouche contains an additional devotional inscription rendered in a more compact hand.
