An Indian Tantric Painting of a Blue Deity Encircling a Zodiacal and Cosmological Wheel, 20th Century.
The painting depicts a stylised blue-skinned deity shown in a squatting, frontal pose, grasping a large circular wheel positioned at the centre of the composition. The wheel is divided into multiple coloured segments, each containing animals, symbols, and emblematic motifs arranged radially around a patterned central disc marked with linear and dotted designs. The figure’s face is boldly rendered with wide eyes, exposed teeth, and an accentuated third eye, crowned by small subsidiary heads aligned along the hairline. The limbs are simplified and symmetrical, with gold and pink ornamental bands at the wrists and ankles, and lotus forms accenting the lower legs.
