An Ottoman Illustrated Pilgrimage Scroll, 19th-Century.
A finely illustrated Ottoman scroll featuring richly coloured depictions of the Holy Sanctuaries of Mecca and Medina, rendered in vibrant pigments on paper. The scroll unfolds vertically to reveal architectural diagrams of the Kaaba, the Prophet’s Mosque, symbolic talismanic diagrams, verses in elegant Ottoman calligraphy, and decorative medallions with gilded illumination. The borders are framed in blue and red, and the upper section retains its original protective leather cap. The scroll includes extensive Ottoman-Arabic text describing the rites of Hajj, along with prayers, invocations, and schematic representations of sacred sites. The detailed geometric and floral motifs, combined with stylised diagrams of the holy precincts.
