A Parthian Silver Tetradrachm of King Mithradates II, Seleukeia Mint, 123–88 BC.
A silver tetradrachm from the reign of Mithradates II of the Parthian Empire (123–88 BC), struck at the Seleukeia mint. The obverse features a detailed left-facing bust of the king, adorned with a diadem and wearing a decorated cloak, his beard and hair rendered with exceptional definition. The reverse presents the seated figure of an archer on an omphalos, facing right, bow in hand. Surrounding the archer is a Greek legend reading: “ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΡΣΑΚΟΥ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ” (Of King Arsaces the Great, God Manifest), referring to the royal Parthian title. This example (Shore 66 var., Sellwood 24.1) weighs 16.13g and measures 28mm.
