A Chinese Jade Carving of a Recumbent Mythical Beast with Monkey.
Carved from pale celadon-toned jade, the figure is depicted in a recumbent pose with the body compact and low to the ground. The surface is smoothly polished, with softly rounded contours defining the limbs, haunches, and back. The beast’s head is stylised with a gently arched snout, incised mouth, and simplified facial features, while shallow linear carving suggests fur and musculature along the neck and shoulders. Perched atop the creature is a smaller monkey figure, rendered with bent limbs and clasping arms, its form integrated harmoniously into the overall composition.
