An Islamic Lapis Lazuli Chess King and Two Bishops, 19th Century.
A finely carved group comprising a central king and two accompanying bishops, executed in richly coloured lapis lazuli. The king of cylindrical form is surmounted by a domed finial and decorated with carved circular bosses and a horizontal band of inscription in low relief around the body. The surface displays natural speckling and tonal variation characteristic of the stone.
