An Islamic Ceramic Chess King and Three Pawns, 19th Century.
Modelled in ceramic, this group comprises a king and three matching pawns, each of domed form with slightly flattened bases. The king is distinguished by its broader proportions and raised upper element, the surface decorated with incised circular and geometric motifs arranged in horizontal registers. The pawns echo the same vocabulary of ornament, featuring stylised vegetal scrollwork and banded decoration carved into the surface.
