An Indian painting in the Kalighat style, executed in watercolour and gouache on paper. The composition depicts Lord Shiva seated beside a reclining goddess, identified as Sati. Shiva is rendered with a blue-grey complexion and traditional iconographic features including a third eye on his forehead, a crescent moon within his matted hair, and snakes draped over his shoulders. He is shown wearing a necklace of rudraksha beads and an orange shawl. Positioned to the left is a trishula (trident) from which hangs a damaru (drum) and a small saffron-coloured pouch. The reclining female figure is adorned in a red and gold sari with matching jewellery and also bears a third eye. A large, dark, stylised rain cloud with white highlights hangs in the sky above the figures. This work is a characteristic example of the Kalighat school which originated in the vicinity of the Kalighat Temple in Calcutta (Kolkata) during the 19th century, known for its bold, calligraphic lines and economical use of colour washes.

Approximately 45 x 28cm
