Lot 304: A SINO-TIBETAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, 19TH CENTURY.
A gilt bronze figure of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, also known as Avalokiteshvara, depicted seated in dhyanasana upon a double-lotus throne. The deity is rendered with a serene facial expression, downcast eyes, and elongated earlobes. The hair is arranged in a high jatamukuta topped with a small finial. The figure is adorned with beaded jewellery, including necklaces and earrings, and is dressed in flowing robes with detailed borders. The right hand is raised in a variant of vitarka mudra, and the left hand rests in the lap. The underside of the figure is sealed with a bronze base plate featuring an incised vishvavajra (crossed vajra) symbol.
H: Approximately 6.5cm
Condition report:
The figure shows significant wear to the original gilding, with much of the gold finish lost to reveal the dark, patinated bronze underneath. There are areas of oxidation and surface pitting throughout, particularly in the recessed areas of the robes and the lotus base. Facial features and fine decorative details have become somewhat softened over time. The base plate remains intact and secure.
