Lot 204: A MUGHAL CARVED PALE CELADON JADE HILT, 19TH CENTURY.
A carved pale celadon jade dagger hilt. The piece is fashioned from a translucent nephrite jade of a pale celadon to greyish-white hue, displaying characteristic natural cloudy inclusions and areas of darker russet-coloured skin from the original pebble at the upper section. The pommel is intricately carved in the round as three lotus pods or flower buds emerging from a flared, petal-form neck. The central grip section is of baluster form, bordered at the top and bottom by raised bands carved with a twisted-rope motif. The body of the grip is decorated in low relief with a flowering lotus plant featuring a central blossom and flanking buds rising from a stylized foliate base. The guard section terminates in wide, twin-scrolled flared ends with ruyi-head terminals, further embellished with incised floral and foliate scrolls.
L: Approximately 13.5cm
Condition report:
The object appears to be in overall excellent condition. There are natural russet and dark mineral inclusions inherent to the stone, particularly evident at the upper section. Minor surface wear and tiny irregularities consistent with age and hand-carving are present. No major chips, cracks, or repairs are visible.
