Lot 205: JAMINI ROY, GOUACHE AND TEMPERA ON PAPER, MOTHER AND CHILD.
A framed Indian painting executed in gouache and tempera on paper, rendered in the distinctive Kalighat-influenced modern Bengal style. The composition depicts a mother and child, drawing from traditional Hindu iconography of the Yasoda and Krishna motif. The mother figure is draped in a deep blue sari accented by a green and brick-red striped border. The child, held within the folds of the sari, holds a white and red rattle. Both figures are characterised by heavy, rhythmic black outlines, flat planes of colour, and elongated, almond-shaped eyes typical of the regional style. The figures are set against a solid brick-red ground, enclosed within a wide black border. The painting bears a painted signature in red Bengali script in the lower right corner within the red field, reading Jamini Roy. The work is presented within a dark wood frame with a gilt inner lip and a wide cream mount.
Approximately 40 x 31cm
