A complete half set of sixteen Islamic chess pieces, carved from pale cream-coloured stone. The set comprises eight pawns and eight principal pieces, including a pair of horse-form knights and other stylised pieces of architectural and abstract form. The pawns are of cylindrical waisted form with raised knop finials, decorated with drilled ring-and-dot motifs and incised bands, while the larger pieces feature carved geometric, foliate and zoomorphic decoration. The pieces display natural variations in tone, surface wear and minor losses consistent with age and use.
