This pair of fan-shaped plaques is crafted from hammered copper alloy using the repoussé and chasing technique. Originating from the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal and executed in the Newar style, these items date to the 18th or 19th century. Each plaque centrally depicts a dynamic naga deity, represented with a human upper torso and a coiled serpentine lower body. A multi-headed cobra hood rises behind the head of each figure. The deities are shown wearing traditional jewellery including large circular earrings and beaded necklaces. Each figure has one arm raised, holding what appears to be a small cymbal or a symbolic solar or lunar disc. A secondary coiled serpent motif is positioned beside each deity. The plaques feature decorative borders: the upper edge is embellished with a repeating pattern of stylised flames or leaf-like scrolls, while the lower curved edge is decorated with a row of raised circular bosses. Multiple small mounting holes around the perimeter indicate that these were originally affixed to a larger wooden or metal framework, such as a shrine or ritual torana. Traces of red ritual pigment, likely vermillion or sindoor, remain on the faces and hoods of the figures, indicating their history of active use in worship.

Condition report:

The plaques are in stable condition with signs of age and ritual use consistent with their estimated period. There is an overall darkened patina with areas of surface tarnish and minor verdigris oxidation. Traces of red ritual pigment are preserved in the recessed areas. The edges show minor irregularities, small dents, and wear consistent with their historical mounting.
