Lot 35: AN ISLAMIC SILVER SIGNET RING FEATURING A CARNELIAN INTAGLIO WITH CALLIGRAPHY.
A signet ring featuring a flat, oval carnelian intaglio of translucent orange-red colour. The stone is deeply hand-engraved with multiple horizontal lines of Arabic calligraphy, appearing in the Nasta’liq or Thuluth style characteristic of Islamic seal work. The intaglio is secured in a silver rub-over bezel setting. The shoulders of the ring are embellished with gold-toned, leaf-shaped decorative overlays featuring textured vein details. The shank transitions into a plain, polished band.
Condition report:
The carnelian intaglio remains in good condition with crisp, well-defined engraving. A small internal inclusion or hairline is visible in the lower-left quadrant of the stone (photo 1). The silver setting and shank show surface scratches and areas of dark oxidation and tarnishing consistent with age (photo 3). The gold-toned leaf decorations exhibit significant wear to the plating, particularly along the raised edges and the transition to the silver shank (photo 2).
