A Spanish School Portrait of a Cleric with the Arms of the Knights of Malta, Oil on Canvas, 19th Century.

Oil on canvas depicting a seated cleric dressed in dark ecclesiastical robes with white collar, portrayed half-length and turned slightly to the viewer’s left. The sitter holds a quill pen above a document, a rolled parchment resting in his opposite hand, suggesting scholarly or administrative office.

In the upper left corner appears a painted coat of arms featuring a red shield with the white cross associated with the Knights of Malta, accompanied by heraldic detailing and inscription beneath.

The composition rendered against a warm brown ground, the modelling of the face softly executed with restrained tonal transitions. Housed in an ornate carved and gilt frame.

Approximately 140 x 108.5cm (incl. frame)
