A Russian Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Woman by Stirnov (Стирнов), Dated 1956.
A mid-20th century Russian oil on canvas portrait depicting a seated woman, signed and dated 1956 to the reverse by Stirnov (Стирнов). The composition presents the sitter in three-quarter profile, her hands gently folded in her lap. She wears a white blouse with soft, expressive brushwork, a deep red skirt, and a blue headscarf accented with subtle red detailing.
The portrait is executed with confident, textured impasto, particularly visible in the handling of the blouse and facial modelling. The subdued background of earthy browns and muted tones directs focus toward the sitter’s contemplative expression and dignified presence. The artist’s painterly approach and restrained palette reflect the character of mid-century Soviet portraiture.
Inscribed in Cyrillic verso with the artist’s name, date 1956, and dimensions 80 cm x 50 cm.
Provenance: Iconastas Collection; acquired Piccadilly Arcade, London, 1970s.
Approximately 76 x 56.5cm
