A Dutch School Oil on Canvas after Vermeer’s The Procuress, 19th/20th Century.
An oil on canvas work executed after Johannes Vermeer’s celebrated composition The Procuress (1656), produced by a Dutch School hand in the 19th/20th century. The scene depicts a lively interior group of four figures engaged in a convivial exchange, illuminated by warm, concentrated light against a darkened background.
The composition closely follows Vermeer’s original arrangement, with the seated young woman dressed in pale tones, flanked by richly attired male figures in broad-brimmed hats, and the older procuress figure positioned between them. The deep reds, ochres and shadowed passages create a strong chiaroscuro effect, characteristic of Dutch Golden Age genre painting.
