A substantial cast brass hanging lamp, Deccan or Persia, 16th–17th century, of deep rounded form with a slightly everted cylindrical rim and tapering lower body terminating in a pointed base. The vessel is fitted with three articulated suspension loops positioned around the rim.
The exterior is extensively decorated with engraved bands of Arabic calligraphy, arranged in successive horizontal registers and divided by narrow bands of scrolling foliate and arabesque ornament. The inscriptions extend around the body and rim, the deeply worked decoration contrasting with the dark, naturally patinated surface.
