A gouache on paper painting by Jamini Roy depicting a stylized warrior or deity mounted upon a horse. The work is executed in the celebrated Bengal school folk style, characterised by bold, rhythmic outlines and a vibrant palette of deep red, green, yellow, and ochre. The central figure is shown in profile with a large, almond-shaped eye, holding a bow and arrow. The horse is rendered with a dark body and decorative trappings including a bell pendant and patterned saddle cloths. The composition is contained within a black and cream linear border against a solid deep red ground. A signature in Bengali script is painted in yellow-ochre pigment in the lower right corner, which reads যামিনী রায় (Jamini Roy). The artwork is presented in a wide cream mount and a contemporary silver-toned wooden frame.
Approximately 45 x 40cm
Condition report:
The painting appears to be in good and stable condition with the colours remaining vibrant. There is a small amount of surface dust visible trapped between the glass and the mount (photo 1).
