A Mamluk-style silver-inlaid brass pen box (qalamdan), of elongated oval form with hinged cover and fastening clasp. The exterior is densely engraved and inlaid in silver and copper, arranged in interlacing geometric and arabesque patterns with repeated roundels and stylised foliate motifs.
The hinged lid is similarly decorated with an elaborate geometric lattice enclosing interlaced motifs, while the sides carry a continuous arrangement of medallions and scrolling ornament. The interior incorporates a separate compartment with a small hinged cover, traditionally intended for an inkwell, alongside the principal compartment for writing implements.
