A substantial and finely cast bronze incense burner, or censer, fashioned as a pair of mythological Buddhist lions, known as Shishi. The larger lion is modelled in a dynamic and powerful stance, its head turned sharply towards its back where a smaller, playful cub is positioned. The head of the primary lion is designed as a removable lid, allowing incense smoke to rise through the perforated mouth and ears. The bronze is finished with extensive hand-chasing to define the intricate, tightly coiled curls of the manes and the flamboyant, foliate-style flame motifs of the tails and legs.

H: Approximately 24cm

Condition report:

The censer is in a condition consistent with its age. There is significant and widespread wear to the original surface decoration, with substantial loss to both the gilding and the red polychromy. The bronze exhibits a deep, dark aged patina with scattered areas of surface oxidisation and minor encrustation, notably in the recesses of the smaller lion\'s mouth. There are typical casting irregularities and minor surface pitting throughout. The structural integrity appears sound, and the removable head fits the body well.
