Lot 216: GHULAM RASOOL: NEO-TANTRIC GOUACHE PAINTING OF A STYLISED SHAKTI DEITY.
An Indian Neo-Tantric painting executed in gouache on natural-toned paper. The composition features a highly stylised, anthropomorphic representation of Shakti or a female energy principle, rendered in a symmetrical yogic posture. The central figure is composed of geometric and flame-like forms in a palette of burnt orange, ochre, and deep red. The head is replaced by a crowning flame motif containing a black bindu (dot) encircled by concentric red and gold bands. The torso is defined by two white circular forms above a central column, while the lower section features a stylized yoni symbol with yellow and white striped detailing. The figure rests upon a pale, rounded mound. The paper exhibits a mottled texture and is mounted within a dark green textile mat. It is housed in a gilded wooden frame with a deep profile and a classic stepped moulding.
Approximately 32.6 x 25cm
Condition report:
The artwork appears to be in stable condition with minor toning to the paper consistent with age. Several small, scattered dark spots of foxing are visible across the background of the paper (photo 1). The textile mat is clean and free from visible staining or fraying. The gilded wooden frame shows minor surface wear, including small abrasions to the gilding at the corners and along the outer edges (photo 1).
