A Safavid tinned-copper kashkul, of characteristic elongated boat-shaped form, raised on a short oval foot and terminating at either end in finely modelled dragon heads, fitted with suspension loops and a long linked carrying chain.
The exterior is extensively engraved, with a broad calligraphic band in Persian/Arabic script running beneath the rim, above further calligraphic cartouches and medallions interspersed with scrolling and foliate ornament. The surface retains areas of its silvery tinned finish with darker patination from age and use.
Kashkuls of this type were traditionally associated with Sufi dervishes, serving as symbolic begging or alms bowls and frequently embellished with religious, poetic or devotional inscriptions.
