A Large Indian Cosmological Painting Depicting the Universe Within the Cosmic Being, 19th-20th Century.
A highly detailed Indian miniature painting depicting a vast cosmological composition centred around a monumental green-hued figure representing the cosmic being. The figure dominates the composition, seated frontally and symmetrically, with the body forming the structural axis of the universe.
On either side of the torso are two large circular cosmological diagrams rendered as intricate mandala-like wheels. Each disc contains concentric registers filled with figures, animals, architectural forms, trees, and narrative scenes, symbolising layered realms of existence. A vertical column of small architectural compartments runs down the centre of the figure’s body, visually linking the upper and lower worlds.
The surrounding field is densely populated with elephants, birds in flight, human figures, temple structures, and stylised trees, all arranged in a balanced and rhythmic pattern. A decorative border featuring repeating white animals against a blue ground frames the entire composition, reinforcing the symmetry and narrative complexity of the work.
