A Japanese Bronze Model of a Komainu (Shishi).
A finely cast Japanese bronze model of a seated komainu (lion-dog), depicted with a fierce expression, open mouth and pronounced fangs beneath a curling moustache. The creature is modelled with prominent horns, bulging eyes and a richly textured mane composed of tight scrolling curls. Its scaled body is robust and compact, resting firmly on four clawed paws, with a stylised tail sweeping around the rear. The underside bears an impressed seal mark.
