A Pair of Chinese Cast Bronze Foo Dogs, 19th/20th Century. –
A pair of Chinese cast bronze sculptures, depicting mythical seated lions or ‘fu dogs’ in a traditional East Asian style. Each figure features a stylized curly mane, an ornate collar, and expressive facial features, resting on an integral rectangular plinth adorned with geometric and scrollwork patterns. The material displays a dark, aged patina with visible remnants of a lighter, possibly gilded, metallic finish, particularly in recessed areas and on some raised details. On the back of each sculpture, a stylized Chinese character ‘壽’ (shòu), meaning ‘longevity’ or ‘long life, ‘ is prominently cast within a decorative cartouche.
