“Untitled” – JAMINI ROY (1887–1972).
A vibrant and expressive Indian folk-style painting attributed to Jamini Roy, depicting a stylised red horse pulling a traditional carriage. Inside the carriage sits a woman adorned in patterned attire, while a male figure stands alongside, rendered in Roy’s iconic simplified forms and bold outlines. Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and a leading figure in India’s cultural renaissance. Trained in European academic techniques, he famously abandoned them to embrace Bengali folk traditions, especially Kalighat pat and indigenous craft forms. His paintings are known for their simplicity, rhythmic lines, and vibrant flat colours. Roy received the Padma Bhushan in 1955 and his works are now held in major collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art. His contribution to Indian art lies in his ability to elevate folk visual culture to the status of fine art, redefining modernism through a distinctly Indian lens.
