An Indian Ramayana Illustration of Jatayu Attacking Ravana’s Chariot, 19th Century or Later.
A finely executed Indian illustration depicting Jatayu, the noble bird-king, attempting to halt Ravana’s chariot during the abduction of Sita, a pivotal episode from the Hindu epic Ramayana. Shown in a stylised, symmetrical form, the paired bird figures represent the fierce struggle and movement of Jatayu as he rises to defend Sita. Above the birds appears a vertically stacked motif symbolising Ravana’s airborne chariot (Pushpaka Vimana), rendered in a regional narrative style.
