A Large Qajar Tinned Copper Kashkul Beggar’s Bowl with Inscriptions and Bestial Motifs, 19th Century.
A rare Qajar dervish beggar’s bowl, or kashkul, finely crafted from tinned copper. This large vessel exhibits a classic boat-shaped form with a dramatically scalloped rim, traditionally suspended by loops for carrying over the shoulder. Its entire exterior is richly decorated with finely engraved vegetal arabesques, scrolling borders, and extensive thuluth-script Arabic calligraphy panels, likely religious invocations or Quranic verses. Of particular interest are the elaborately chased figural scenes on the base, which depict a lion attacking prey amidst a profusion of floral motifs—an allegorical tableau often associated with Shia symbolism.
