A Jain Manuscript Page Depicting the Planetary Deities, from a Manuscript of Śrīcandra’s Saṃgrahaṇīratna, 18th Century
An illustrated folio from a Jain manuscript of the Saṃgrahaṇīratna by Śrīcandra. This gouache and ink composition on handmade paper vividly illustrates the Navagraha (nine planetary deities), integral to Jain cosmology and time-keeping systems.
The folio is divided into two vertical sections. The left side presents planetary chariots—each deity enthroned on a celestial vehicle, such as the antelope-drawn cart of the Moon god (Chandra) and an elephant-driven chariot possibly of Shani (Saturn). The right side features circular medallions on a deep floral ground, each containing a deity associated with a celestial body, surrounded by their symbolic mounts or attendants.
Approximately 26 x 11.8cm
