Krishnaji Howlaji Ara (1914–1985) was a pioneering modernist painter in India and one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists’ Group. Born in a humble background in Bolarum, Hyderabad, Ara overcame early hardships to establish himself as a significant figure in Indian modern art. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he was largely self-taught and developed a distinct style characterized by bold compositions, vibrant color palettes, and an unrestrained expressionist approach. His works often depicted female nudes, still lifes, and urban landscapes, breaking away from traditional artistic norms in India. Ara’s paintings stood out for their spontaneous brushwork and the emotive use of color, reflecting a deep engagement with form and movement. His contributions to Indian art helped pave the way for modernist experimentation, making him an essential figure in the post-independence art movement.
