Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of India’s most celebrated modern artists, known for his distinctive style that blended traditional folk art with modernist sensibilities. Born in Bengal, Roy was initially trained in Western academic painting at the Government College of Art, Calcutta, but later rejected this approach in favor of indigenous artistic traditions. Drawing inspiration from Kalighat pat paintings and rural Bengali folk art, his works are characterized by bold lines, flat colors, and simplified yet expressive forms. He often depicted themes from Hindu mythology, rural life, and everyday scenes, using natural pigments and materials such as woven mats instead of canvas. His unique visual language not only revitalized Indian folk traditions but also positioned him as a pioneer of modern Indian art. Today, Jamini Roy’s works are highly revered and remain a cornerstone of India’s artistic heritage.
