"Untitled" – SADEQUAIN (1930–1987).
This composition blends bold calligraphic strokes with vibrant colour in a striking expression of Islamic visual tradition. The dominant motif, rendered in angular black calligraphy, is set against a beige ground with a jagged blue-green border that mimics energy or illumination. A large stylised eye form, filled with ochre, anchors the centre, while accents of soft pink highlight the composition. Arabic inscriptions — including "From God the Merciful" — appear masterfully integrated into the flowing design. Signed in the lower right.
Sadequain was one of Pakistan’s most celebrated modern artists and a master of calligraphy and mural painting. Known for revitalising Islamic calligraphy in contemporary art, he brought poetic and spiritual depth to his distinctive visual style. He painted vast public murals, illustrated the poetry of Ghalib and Iqbal, and received accolades including the Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Sadequain’s work remains central to Pakistan’s cultural heritage.
